The internet encompasses a dual identity as a highly sophisticated manmade tool and a rapidly-evolving social environment. It is dynamic, complex, immensely impactful, and highly subjective, and efforts at understanding it would benefit from the use of a metaphor of the internet as a space. Given the complexity of the internet, what is its appropriate spatial metaphor, and what are the metaphor’s implications? Debates about the internet suggest the way people conceptualize the internet informs their views, positions, and ideas.
